CRAB SEASON OPENS: LET’S TALK MONEY
I know, it’s the long-awaited opening week of the famed Oregon Dungeness crab season, and you’re thinking: “All I want is to get my mitts on some of that fresh, sweet-tasting and succulent meat, dripping in warm butter – and SHE wants to talk about money.” Well, let’s face it: it’s the economy – and when it comes to Oregon, our crab fishery is kind of a big deal.
I sit here on the edge of the Columbia River in historic Astoria, Oregon, awai…

OCTOBER ON THE COAST
Fall is upon us here on the Oregon Coast. The ocean starts boiling up, the winds blow from every direction, and boats stack up like cord wood in the harbor as fishermen leave the water, jump in their trucks and head for the hills in pursuit of the mighty buck (the four-legged kind of buck, that is). It’s my favorite time of year, as the hustle and bustle of the summer winds down. Read on for updates on what’s going on with fisheries this month and what we…

Pink shrimp, bay shrimp, salad shrimp — whatever you call ‘em — they’re simply delicious. Shrimp season got off to a little of a late start this April, as fishers and processors failed to come to agreement on price negotiations. But that came around, the boats untied and we are in some shrimp now!
Did you know that the Oregon Pink Shrimp fishery is considered the best shrimp fishery in the world? The gear used in the fishery has virtually no impact on habitat and results in almost zero b…

The moment we have been waiting for is here! First of season Dungness crab is now available. Local Ocean co-owner Al Pazar on the F/V Delma Ann brought in our fist delivery. I just got a report from him on the ocean and all indication for the early season are good. He said the weather has been a little “tough” and the bar has been “iffy” for the smaller boats. This is his third day of fishing and as he expected the first pick of the gear has been very good. Lots …

Hold on to your crab crackers, Dungeness fans. Crab boats are still tied up at the dock because of fisher/processor inability to reach a price agreement prior to yesterday’s official start of season. Much of this disagreement hinges on the whether or not the crabs are meaty enough to go to market and what the ex-vessel (to the boat) value of those crabs should be.
The fishing vessel Chevelle went out today to harvest a few test crabs that will go to a lab for assessment. Both the S…

Often in business things just don’t work out the way we plan. It is with deep grief that I announce Local Ocean Seafoods will be closing our operation at the Oregon Coast Aquarium at the end of September.
Local Ocean has received many benefits and learned critical lessons during our tenure with the aquarium. One key insight that has emerged from this experience is a deeper recognition of what Local Ocean’s core business is: giving people the best seafood experience of their lives. This h…

Summer at last!
July is here and with it a plethora of fresh local fish to choose from.
Halibut: The first and maybe only halibut opener of the year was on Wednesday. With most boats getting their full quota, it is uncertain if the season will allow for a second day of fishing next week. So I guess the moral to that story is: get ’em while they’re fresh.
We’re are buying fresh halibut Thursday evening from Local Ocean co-owner Al Pazar off the F/V Delma Ann. We’ll be offering fresh…
