Oregon Pink Shrimp: A Small but Mighty Pacific Northwest Treasure

Oregon Pink Shrimp is a staple of the Pacific Northwest, known for its sweet, delicate flavor and tender texture. As the first shrimp fishery in the world to be certified sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council, Oregon’s Pink Shrimp industry sets the gold standard for responsible seafood harvesting.

Caught in the cold, clean waters off the Oregon coast, these wild shrimp are harvested using advanced trawl methods designed to minimize bycatch and protect ocean ecosystems. The season runs from April through October, bringing in fresh, high-quality shrimp that are quickly processed to preserve their pristine taste and texture.

Flavor & Culinary Uses

Oregon Pink Shrimp are naturally sweet and tender, making them perfect for a variety of dishes. Their small size and firm bite make them ideal for shrimp cocktails, ceviche, salads, pasta, and chowders. Whether tossed into buttery garlic shrimp scampi or folded into a creamy seafood dip, these shrimp bring a taste of the Oregon coast to every bite.

Fishing & Sustainability

The Oregon Pink Shrimp fishery is a leader in sustainable seafood, using innovative trawl gear that reduces bycatch and protects juvenile shrimp. Strict management practices ensure a healthy and thriving population, keeping this fishery productive for generations to come.

A Legacy of Innovation

A major breakthrough in bycatch reduction came from Newport native and longtime friend of Local Ocean, Sara Skamser. Sara played a crucial role in developing trawl nets that significantly reduced unintended catch in the Oregon Pink Shrimp fishery. Her work helped set a new industry standard for sustainability, ensuring the long-term health of shrimp populations and other marine species.

Although she sadly passed away in recent years, Sara’s legacy lives on in every responsibly harvested catch. You can read more about her groundbreaking work here.
